અત્યારે આપણે કોરોના ની વેકસીન ની આતુરતા થી રાહ જોઈ રહિયા છે, પણ જ્યારે વડોદરા માં પ્લેગ ફાટી નીકળ્યો હતો ત્યારે મહારાજા સયાજીરાવ ત્રીજા એ આ પરિસ્થિતિ ને કાબૂ માં લીધી હતી .

કોરોના મહામારી આ સમયમાં અત્યારે આપણે વેક્સીન મળે તેની આતુરતાથી રાહ જોઈ રહ્યા છીએ ,પણ શું તમને ક્યારેય એવો વિચાર આવ્યો કે ભૂતકાળ ની અંદર કેવી રીતે મહામારી સામે લડાયું હશે ?

જાણો : જ્યારે વડોદરામાં પ્લેગ ફાટી નીકળ્યો હતો ત્યારે મહારાજા સયાજીરાવ ત્રીજાએ યુક્રેનના બેક્ટેરિયોલોજીસ્ટ ડોક્ટર વાલ્ડમેર હાફકિનને પરિસ્થિતિ કાબુ કરવા માટે બોલાવ્યા હતા. હાફકિન તે સમયના એકમાત્ર માઇક્રોબાયોલોજી હતા એમણે કોલેરા અને પ્લેગ ની વેસ્ટન નું પહેલું પોતાની જાત પર કર્યું હતું. 1897માં વાલ્ડમેર હાફકિન બરોડા સ્ટેટ માં આવી પહોંચ્યા હતા. લોકલ કમ્યુનિટી સાથે કામ શરુ કર્યું હતું. વર્ષ 1899 માં ડોક્ટર વાલ્ડમેર હાફકિન દ્વારા ઇન્સ્ટિટ્યૂટ ફોર ટ્રેનિંગ રિસર્ચ એન્ડ ટેસ્ટિંગ લેબોરેટરી શરૂ કરવામાં આવી હતી. શરૂઆતના સમયની આ પહેલી લેબોરેટરી હતી.

Abbas Tyabji (extreme right) – an eminent freedom fighter, the Chief Justice of Baroda State and personal friend of the Majaraja, took his daughter Sharifa (seen with Haffkine’s arm around her shoulder) and little cousin Hatim (extreme right) to receive the inoculation. In 1899 Dr Haffkine went on to set up the Haffkine Institute for Training Research and Testing as a plague research laboratory. It is one of the earliest institutes if it’s kind.
Interesting fact: Abbas Tyabji is maternal grand father of Padma Bhushan India historian (and my academic idol) Irfan Habib, who also happens to be born in Baroda!
